A few NOTES on auditions:
Oh…auditioning. It is that sometimes loved, sometimes dreaded and often feared process that we all must go through as actors in order to get that part. Just like so many thing in life, practice and preparation make perfect.
There are some things that are out of your control in an audition for example, you cannot control what the director’s vision is for the show and whether you fit with that vision. On the flip side there are MANY thing that you CAN control and it is always best to focus on those!
Here are a few tips and tricks that may be useful next time you are thinking of auditioning. Also, always remember the Venture Theatre staff and teachers are always here as a resourse for you and your family. YOU are why we do what we do and love what we do.
Tips and Tricks for Auditioning:
- Read the audition information carefully. You want to make sure that you come prepared with everything needed.
- Know the play before you come in. Read the play or musical in advance if you can. At Venture Theatre and most theatre’s you can check out a copy of the script to read. Knowing the story in advance will help you make informed and confident acting choices!
- Be on time. Arrive AT LEAST 10-15 minutes early to an audition.
- Dress appropriately: You want to make a very strong first impression! Dress up or dress for the “part”
- Wear good shoes!
- BREATHE
- Remember, whoever you are auditioning for WANTS you to succeed and they are on your side!
If it is a prepared audition, BE PREPARED
- If in the audition information the director asked for a monologue or song to be performed be sure it is memorized and well rehearsed.
- It is not always about talent o Directors want to cast individuals that work hard, are reliable and that play well with others. Directors will often choose to automatically take an actor out of the running if they are rude, disrespectful or unreliable regardless of how talented they may be.
- BE, LOUD, BOLD and SAY YES! o Show the director that you are willing to take risks. Even if you don’t think you know HOW to do something that is asked, say yes and try!
- Say thank you o When the audition is done thank the director. This will leave a very nice impression.
